Men's basketball standouts

The men's basketball team finished the year 13-12 and placed third with an 8-4 record in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The season included wins against 2004 NCAA Tournament participants Brockport State (74-69) and Babson College (80-78 OT). MIT upset the Cougars, 79-69, in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.

Guard Dave McNamara '04, forward Trevor Walker '04 and center Tim Dutille '06 led the Cougars this year. McNamara was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team for the fourth time in his career. He led the team in scoring with 18.7 points per game, while earning 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. McNamara also averaged 2.6 three-point field goals, while shooting 36.2 percent from long range. He has received many awards this year, including his selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's Basketball College Division All-District I Second Team. He also finished second on Clark's All-Time scoring list with 1,827 career points.

Dutille was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team for the first time. He finished the year second on the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game and first in rebounds with 6.0 per game. Dutille, who recorded three double-doubles on the year, shot an impressive 58.4 percent from the floor and ranked first in the conference.

Walker was third on the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game and second in rebounds with 5.0 per game. He added 2.0 assists per game, while shooting 31.4 percent from long range and averaging 2.4 three-pointers per game. Walker finished his career eighth on the scoring list with 1,522 points and holds records for most games played in a career (111) and most three-pointers: made in a game (9), attempted in a game (19), made in a career (319) and attempted in a career (848).

Women's basketball earns automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament

The women's basketball team finished with impressive 21-7 overall and 10-3 NEWMAC records and earned an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Tournament with a 68-59 win over No. 1 seed Springfield College in the conference championship. The Cougars fell to Salem State 78-67 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

This was the Cougars 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament and 25th postseason appearance in the last 28 years. Clark last made a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and reached the Sweet Sixteen. In 20 years with the Cougars, Head Coach Pat Glispin has compiled a 373-157 overall record and led her squads to seven NCAA appearances, 17 overall postseason selections and 11 20-win seasons. Glispin was named the 2004 NEWMAC Coach of the Year.

Graduate student Rachael Turkington '03 was named NEWMAC Player of the Year. She earned All-Conference First Team honors for the second consecutive year and 2004 Verizon Academic All-District I College Division Second Team honors. She was also a finalist for the Jostens Award, which honors the most outstanding men's and women's Division III basketball players of the year and takes into account basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. Turkington led the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game and in assists with 4.2 per game, while grabbing 3.2 rebounds per game.

Ashley Auclair '07 was named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. Auclair started in all 28 games and was named to the All-Conference Second Team. She was second on the team in scoring with 13.8 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 7.6 per game, while shooting 49.4 percent from the floor. She added 1.6 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. Auclair, who recorded seven double-doubles including 17 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game, scored double-digits an impressive 23 times. In the conference, she ranked fifth in scoring, second in field-goal percentage, ninth in rebounds and third in blocks.

Andrea Comen '06 had a solid year for the Cougars averaging 6.0 points, 3.0 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. Echo Freeman '05 was a major contributor off the bench with 7.8 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Swimming season highlights

The men's swimming team ended the 2003-04 season with a 2-9 overall record and finished seventh at the NEWMAC Championships. Clark defeated Gordon College (101-90) and Colby-Sawyer (123-41). Captain Roy Barnum '04 was Clark's top male swimmer and won multiple events six times during the season. At the NEWMAC Championships, Barnum placed sixth in the 200-yard IM event (2:01.58), ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.89) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.10). Brett Moore '07 finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (55.97) and Jesse Bausell '06 placed 12th in 1650-yard freestyle (18:44.86).

The women's swimming team started the season with wins over Gordon College (125-80) and Bridgewater State College (132-102) and finished 2-9 overall. The Cougars placed 10th at the NEWMAC Championships. Anna Jolley '06, the team's top sprinter, won multiple events in three meets. Sara Stephenson '06 finished 14th in the 400-yard IM (5:22.08) at the NEWMAC Championships.
